Approx. 5 cups.
Alternative Ingredients are listed in Red
|1||cup||Trader Joe's Vintage Cola *|
|Classic Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, RC Cola, A & W Root Beer, Jolt, Moxie, Cheerwine|
|¼||cup||Butter (not margarine)|
|½||cup||Dark Brown Sugar (packed)|
|½||cup||Grandma's Unsulfured Molasses|
|½||cup||Apple Cider Vinegar|
|½||lg||Sweet Onion (finely diced)|
|1½||tbls||A1 Steak Sauce|
|1||tbls||English Dry Mustard|
|1||tbls||Ancho Chili Powder|
|1||tbls||Aged Modena** Balsamic Vinegar|
|1||tsp||Crystal Hot Pepper Sauce|
Combine all ingredients in a sauce pan and simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture coats the back of a metal spoon (about 2-3 hours). Let steep in the refrigerator for at least four hours (overnight is best).
* Trader Joe's Vintage Cola is made with cane sugar, just like all sodas were in ancient history (before high fructose corn syrup). If you use an alternative that DOES NOT use cane sugar, you should replace the ½ cup Dark Brown Sugar with a half cup of Raw Sugar. Not only does it effect the taste, to a small degree, but more importantly it provides for the carmelization and glazing.
** Modena is not a brand - there are several brands that are from Modena, Italy... which is where the best balsamic vinegar comes from.
